RUMORS Spreading About Ukraine President Yanukovych's Whereabouts With Viktor Yanukovych remaining silent despite the historic changes taking place there's growing speculation over where he might be hiding. The deposed president is said to have left the capital aboard a helicopter on Friday night. But its destination remains unknown. Some members of the his Party of Regions believe he is in Donetsk, his political power base in the east, that is home to many who have grown rich under Yanukovych's rule. An aide said his appearance on television on Saturday was filmed in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, although he failed to appear at a meeting of regional governors. Wherever he is, the 63-year-old is unlikely to go undetected for long. There is fresh speculation he could be trying to get into Russia after the Interfax news agency reported that two armed men tried to bribe border guards to let Yanukovych fly out of Donetsk on a private jet. Four years after swearing in as president Viktor Yanukovych remains missing after being seen for the last time Sunday at Crimea pro-russian region. Close aids to president assure that he's still in Ukraine and that he'll not leave the country. Protected by Russians or by US? All latest updates. The ukrainian news agency Unian reports that the interim Interior Minister, Arsen Avakov has admitted today, during a press conference in Kyiv, that all forceful attempts to arrest former President Viktor Yanukovych in Crimea were abandoned to avoid an armed conflict. "I believe that we should not allow any military confrontation or conflict there (in Crimea). I tell you frankly that this was the reason why, when I was with Valentin Nalyvaichenko (Interim Security Service chief) in Crimea and Sevastopol, we did not took strict action against Viktor Yanukovych, because at this point this kind of action could be understood as a provocation"- said Avakov to reporters. He also said that any operation might have led to armed confrontation with "foreign forces", thus suggesting that Yanukovych was hiding at one of the bases of Russian Black Sea Fleet stationed in and around Sevastopol. Tensions on the region are high since this morning as hundreds of Crimean Tatars rallied outside the Crimean regional parliament in Simferopol to protest against growing calls for the region to secede from the rest of the country. They later stormed the building. Clashes between pro- and anti-Russian groups are responsible for at least one dead and at least 7 injured. Russia started this morning military drills to ensure the security of the black sea fleet based in Sevastopol.

Antonov An-148 The Antonov An-148 (Ukrainian: Антонов Ан-148) Antonov Design Bureau from Kiev, Ukraine, is a regional jet aircraft designed by the Ukrainian Antonov Design Bureau and produced by Ukraine's Kiev Aviation Plant AVIANT. Antonov has also outsourced production to Russia's Voronezh Aircraft Production Association. Development of the plane was started in the 1990s, and the maiden flight took place on 17 December 2004. The plane completed its certification programme on 26 February 2007. The An-148 has a maximum range of 2,100--4,400 kilometers and is able to carry 68--99 passengers, depending on the configuration. The An-158 is a stretched fuselage version of the aircraft for 99 passengers. The beginning of the An-148 project dates to the early 1990s, when the design work of the An-74-68 passenger aircraft was started at the Ukrainian Antonov Design Bureau. In 2001, the plane was renamed to An-148. The development team, headed by P.V. Balabuev, used the An-74TK-300 transport aircraft as a starting point. Its fuselage was extended and the new plane's wing design was created from scratch. The developers decided to use the Motor Sich D-436-148 engines. The An-148 is manufactured by the Ukrainian Kiev Aviation Plant AVIANT and Russia's Voronezh Aircraft Production Association (VASO). Many companies are involved in the project; however, at least 70% of the aircraft's hardware is made by Russian producers.[6] Due to its technical parameters the An-148 has become popular on the regional passenger airliner market. The An-148's list price is about $24--30 million.[7] The main problem with the project has been increasing the plane's sluggish production rate. The AVIANT plant in Kiev initially failed to respond to growing orders leading to VASO's growing involvement in the plane's assembly.[7] In 2002, the production of the first 3 prototypes was begun at Kiev Aviation Plant AVIANT. On 17 November 2004, the first prototype completed it maiden flight. Second prototype joined the testing programme in April 2005.[8] During the certification programme, the two prototypes performed about 600 flights in total.[9] On 26 February 2007 the aircraft, its D-436-148 engine and the AI-450-МS auxiliary power unit were certified by the Interstate Aviation Committee of Russia (AR MAK) and the State Aviation Administration of Ukraine. On 28 June 2009, the first serially produced An-148, manufactured at Voronezh Aircraft Production Association in Voronezh took to the skies.[8] Polet Airlines An-148-100E at Sheremetyevo Airport on 10 October 2011. In April 2005, the An-148, received its first order from Ilyushin Finance Co. (IFC) leasing company and the airline company Krasair signed a lease agreement for 10 aircraft with an option on 5 units valued at $270 million.[10] Other variants with Western-made engines with thrust of 6000 -- 8000 kgf (such as the General Electric CF34 or Rolls-Royce BR700) are being considered.[11] On 2 June 2009, the first An-148 entered commercial service at the Ukrainian carrier Aerosvit. The first passenger flight was from Kharkov to Kiev; the plane had the civilian registration UR-NTA.[13] By November 2009, Aerosvit was operating the An-148 on the Kiev--Odessa and Simferopol--Lviv routes, performing two flights a day with the average flight time of 4--5 hours.[7] On 21 December 2009, the An-148 was put into service in Russia with Rossiya airline. The first passenger flight was FV135 from Pulkovo Airport in Sankt Petersburg to Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow.[8] By 20 May 2010, Rossiya's An-148 fleet had accumulated a total of 915 flight hours and performed 710 landings.[14] Rossiya complained that the aircraft experienced some reliability problems.[15] There were some technical problems with the plane, and pilot training could not be ramped up fast enough, leading to pilot shortages.[14] However, by 2011 the situation had clearly improved.[16] On 15 February 2010, the An-148 started international flights to Poland with the Aerosvit airline.[17] The Russian ambassador in Bolivia, Leonid Golubev and the Government of Evo Morales are negotiating the acquisition of one plane of this type for the use as the presidential carrier and other 8 for the state-owned airlines: Boliviana de Aviación (BoA) and Transporte Aéreo Militar (TAM). An-148-100A - main version of the An-148. It has a passenger capacity of 75 in a one-class standard configuration or 68 in a two-class configuration and a range of 2,100 kilometres (1,300 mi); An-148-100B - extended range version up to 3,500 kilometres (2,200 mi); An-148-100E - extended range version up to 4,400 kilometres (2,700 mi) and a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 43.7 tonnes; An-158 at Farnborough Air Show in 2010 An-168 - business variant, seating between 8 and 40 passengers, with a range up to 7000 km;[23] An-178 - cargo variant, with a payload capacity of up to 25 tons http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonov_An-148

Only five aircraft of this new type are currently operated commercially - all of them by Cubana de Aviacion. Cubana de Aviación S.A., commonly known as Cubana, is a national airline based in Cuba, as well as the country's largest airline. It was founded in October 1929, becoming one of the earliest airlines to emerge in Latin America. It has its corporate headquarters in Havana, and its main base is located at José Martí International Airport. Originally a subsidiary of Pan American World Airways and later a private company owned by Cuban investors, Cubana has been wholly owned by the Cuban government since May 1959 and celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2009. Cubana was a founder and is a current member of the International Air Transport Association, the International Association of Aeronautical Telecommunications (SITA) and the International Association of Latin American Air Transportation (AITAL). The airline was established on 8 October 1929 as Compañía Nacional Cubana de Aviación Curtiss S.A., initially as a flying school as well as a charter carrier, beginning scheduled services in 1930. The airline's name indicated its association with the Curtiss aircraft manufacturing company. Cubana's early fleet used Curtiss Robin, amphibian Sikorsky S-38, Ford Trimotor, and Lockheed Electra (L-10) aircraft. Pan American acquired Cubana in 1932, and the word Curtiss was deleted from the carrier's name. By the end of the decade, the carrier had a fleet of four Ford Trimotors and three Lockheed Electras that operated on the domestic Havana–Camaguey, Havana–GuantanamoBaracoa and Santiago–Baracoa routes. In the early 1990s, Cubana pursued a multi-faceted strategy to face the challenges posed by the end of the Socialist bloc and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. This strategy targeted a restructuring of Cubana's fleet, the revamping of the airline's technical capabilities, and upgrading the quality of passenger services. After the early 1990s, spare parts for Cubana's Soviet-built aircraft became increasingly harder to source. Limited financial resources and lack of Western financing to replace these aircraft, coupled with restrictions imposed by the U.S. embargo on the sale of American-built aircraft and components (including engines and avionics), made it necessary to keep some of the airline's Soviet-built airplanes in service. Cubana had received its last three new Il-62Ms in late 1990 and early 1991 [along with two other (also new) similar aircraft in 1988 and 1989], and was able to keep them in service long after the USSR's dissolution and the end of all Il-62 production in the mid-1990s. Cubana started leasing some Western aircraft (Airbus, Boeing) for limited periods of time in the mid-1990s, to help sustain its services to Europe, Canada and some Latin American destinations, given the rapid growth of Cuba's tourism sector. In the early 2000s (decade) Cubana refurbished several of its Il-62Ms to use on some of its international routes (all but one of these aircraft were removed from service in 2011), and in 2004 it embarked on a long-term renovation programme. The strategy is based on the purchase of $100 million a year in new generation Russian-built aircraft until 2012. In 2012 Cubana has completely renovated its fleet with new-generation Russian airliners. As part of its renovation strategy, Cubana has sought to upgrade its technical support capabilities. The airline established a joint venture company with Iberia Airlines of Spain in 2005, to maintain and overhaul Western-built aircraft, such as Airbus and Boeing. The Antonov An-148 (Ukrainian: Антонов Ан-148) is a regional jet airliner designed by the Ukrainian Antonov company and produced by Antonov itself and also on outsource by Russia's Voronezh Aircraft Production Association. Development of the aircraft was started in the 1990s, and the maiden flight took place on 17 December 2004. The aircraft completed its certification programme on 26 February 2007. The An-148 has a maximum range of 2,100–4,400 km (1,100–2,400 nmi; 1,300–2,700 mi) and is able to carry 68–85 passengers, depending on the configuration. The Antonov An-158 is a stretched fuselage version of the aircraft, accommodating up to 99 passengers. Other changes include the installation of wingtip fences.
